Personalized Support for Better Liver Health
Hepatitis A and hepatitis B are viral infections that affect the liver. Although they may cause similar symptoms, they spread differently and require different approaches to prevention, monitoring, and treatment.
At Cabarrus Specialty Pharmacy, our pharmacists help patients understand their medications, manage treatment routines, and coordinate with healthcare providers throughout their care.
Understanding Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is usually a short-term infection. It spreads mainly through close personal contact or food and water contaminated with the virus. Most people recover completely and do not develop lasting liver damage.
There is no specific antiviral medication for hepatitis A. Treatment generally focuses on rest, adequate fluids, proper nutrition, and symptom management under a healthcare provider’s guidance.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B spreads through infected blood and certain body fluids. It may cause an acute, short-term illness or develop into a chronic infection.
Without appropriate monitoring and care, chronic hepatitis B can lead to serious complications, including liver scarring, liver failure, and liver cancer. Prescription antiviral medications can help control the virus and reduce the risk of liver damage, although they do not cure hepatitis B.
Common Symptoms
Some people have no noticeable symptoms. When symptoms occur, they may include:
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea or vomiting
- Abdominal discomfort
- Joint pain
- Dark urine
- Pale or clay-colored stools
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, known as jaundice
Because hepatitis B may remain silent for years, testing is important even when you feel well.
Testing and Diagnosis
Healthcare providers diagnose hepatitis A and hepatitis B through blood tests. Additional laboratory tests or liver imaging may be needed to determine whether an infection is acute or chronic and to evaluate liver health.
The CDC recommends that all adults be screened for hepatitis B at least once during their lifetime. Pregnant women should be screened during every pregnancy, and people with ongoing exposure risks may need periodic testing.
