Crohn’s disease is a chronic form of inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, that causes inflammation in the digestive tract. It can affect any area from the mouth to the anus, although the small intestine and beginning of the large intestine are commonly involved.
Symptoms may alternate between active periods, known as flares, and periods of remission. Although there is currently no cure, effective treatment can reduce inflammation, relieve symptoms, support healing, and lower the risk of complications.
At Cabarrus Specialty Pharmacy, our pharmacists help patients understand their prescribed medications, coordinate refills, and stay on track throughout treatment.
Common Symptoms
Crohn’s disease affects each person differently. Symptoms may include:
- Persistent diarrhea
- Abdominal pain or cramping
- Unintended weight loss
- Reduced appetite
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Nausea or vomiting
- Blood in the stool
- Mouth sores
- Anemia
Crohn’s disease may also cause inflammation outside the digestive tract, affecting the joints, skin, eyes, liver, or bile ducts.
Children with Crohn’s disease may experience delayed growth or development.
Treatment
Treatment is personalized based on the location and severity of the disease, previous therapy, other health conditions, and individual treatment goals.
Options may include:
- Corticosteroids for short-term control of inflammation
- Immunomodulators
- Biologic medications
- Targeted oral therapies
- Antibiotics for certain infections or complications
- Nutritional therapy or supplements
- Surgery when medication does not provide adequate control or complications develop
The goals of treatment are to reduce intestinal inflammation, control symptoms, prevent flares, promote remission, and protect the digestive tract from further damage.
Biologic and Specialty Medications
Biologic medications target specific proteins or pathways involved in inflammation. Depending on the prescribed product, treatment may be given by:
- An injection under the skin at home
- An intravenous infusion in a healthcare setting
- An initial infusion followed by maintenance injections
Some patients may be prescribed targeted oral medications instead. Your gastroenterologist will determine which treatment is appropriate based on your health history and response to previous therapies.
