Personalized Support for Restoring Healthy Iron Levels
Iron is an essential mineral the body uses to make hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body.
Iron deficiency occurs when the body does not have enough stored iron. If it continues, the body may not produce enough healthy red blood cells, resulting in iron-deficiency anemia. With proper testing and treatment of the underlying cause, iron levels can often be restored. Cabarrus Specialty Pharmacy helps patients understand prescribed iron therapy, manage side effects, and stay on track with monitoring and treatment.
Common Symptoms
Mild iron deficiency may not cause noticeable symptoms. As the deficiency becomes more severe, symptoms may include:
- Fatigue or weakness
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Headaches
- Pale skin
- Cold hands or feet
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Chest discomfort
- Difficulty concentrating
- Reduced exercise tolerance
- Brittle nails or hair loss
- Restless legs
- Craving ice or nonfood substances, known as pica
These symptoms can occur with many health conditions. Blood testing is necessary to determine whether iron deficiency is the cause.
When to Seek Immediate Care
Seek urgent medical attention for:
- Chest pain
- Severe difficulty breathing
- Fainting
- A very rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Heavy or uncontrolled bleeding
- Vomiting blood
- Bloody or tar-like stools
- Signs of a serious reaction during or after IV iron
- Suspected iron overdose
Monitoring Your Progress
Your provider may repeat blood tests to determine whether treatment is working and iron stores have been restored.
Continue treatment for the full period recommended by your provider. Hemoglobin may improve before the body’s iron stores are fully replenished.
Contact your healthcare team if symptoms do not improve, side effects interfere with treatment, or you have difficulty obtaining or taking the prescribed product.
