Personalized Support for Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis

Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly called IBD, describes chronic conditions that cause inflammation in the digestive tract. The two primary forms are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

IBD can affect digestion, nutrition, energy, and daily life. Although there is currently no cure, appropriate treatment can reduce inflammation, control symptoms, promote remission, and lower the risk of complications.

Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. Inflammation may extend through several layers of the intestinal wall and can appear in separate areas.

Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis causes continuous inflammation and ulcers along the inner lining of the large intestine, including the colon and rectum.

IBD is different from irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS. IBS affects how the digestive system functions but does not cause the ongoing intestinal inflammation or tissue damage associated with IBD.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms vary based on the type, location, and severity of inflammation. They may include:

  • Persistent diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Blood or mucus in the stool
  • Urgent or frequent bowel movements
  • Feeling that the bowel has not emptied completely
  • Reduced appetite
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Anemia

IBD may also cause inflammation outside the digestive tract, affecting the joints, skin, eyes, liver, or bile ducts. Symptoms can alternate between active periods called flares and periods of remission.
